ALLIANCE OF HISPANIC LAW ENFORCEMENT

Embracing a deep sense of duty

On our last scheduled meeting, we had an excellent presentation given by guest speakers regarding the issue of Officer involved weapons discharge incidents. I would personally like to express a sincere thank you to our guest speakers: Detective Oscar Arteaga, IPRA Superintendent Michael Duffy, FOP Representative Richard Aguilar, Officer Thomas Vargas, and EAP Officer David Saucedo. All of these presenters did an outstanding job and gave insight as to what to expect if you are involved in a weapon discharge incident.

I would like to highlight some of the key issues mentioned during the symposium:

  1. A walk through will still be conducted with the Officer by the On Call Incident Commander (OCIC), formally referred to as Street Deputy.

  2. IPRA will continue to do a walk through with OCIC, not the officer involved.

  3. You will be re-located to the appropriate Area for the investigation.

  4. There will be no round table. If IPRA wants to ask the officer questions, the FOP attorney will be present and the OCIC may give a direct order for the officer involved to answer questions posed by IPRA investigators.

  5. Based on the FOP contract you may be requested to submit to blood and urine samples.

On a side note, the Chicago Board of Education has announced that a new high school will be named, Eric Solorio Academy High School. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 10:00 am. The school is located at 54th Street and St. Louis Ave. The dedication will commence at 10:00 am and I would encourage a representation from our membership. Hopefully this does not conflict with your schedule and you are able to honor one of our fallen officers.

Our next meeting will be on September 15th, see you there!
